Corina Lemmer: Fragile

Corina Lemmer's theme for this exhibition centres around the fragility of human beings, society and nature. Images of birds' nests symbolise our instinctive need for creating places of safety and security in a threatening world.

The artist compares the handwork of humans with the artistry of weaver birds, shown in a series of watercolours and charcoal drawings in which she incorporates beadwork, crochet, ceramic sherds and the block printed designs of William Morris. In a number of oil paintings she juxtaposes nests and other objects in surrealistic landscapes to suggest the vulnerability of nature and humans. The two dimensional and three dimensional fibre works on the exhibition comprise embroidery, crochet, ceramic sherds, and Zulu beadwork by Ngoneni Kubheka. A continuing theme in her work is the connectedness of all people with each other and their environment.
