Trevor Makhoba - Standard Bank Young Artist

Trevor Makhoba, the winner of this year's Standard Bank Young Artist Award for visual art, is a self-taught artist who was born in Cato Manor, Durban, in 1956. Trevor Makhoba was born in Durban and, self-taught, became a full-time artist in 1989.

"He is an emerging contemporary artist whose "vision focuses on the state of flux of black life in South Africa. His narrative paintings are a vehicle through which he communicates his personal disquiet and anxiety," says Nicole Donald of Gallery on Tyrone in Johannesburg, who wrote the notes for last year's Standard Bank National Arts Festival programme.

Makhoba's works reflect his perception of such issues as child molestation, alcohol abuse, crime and violence. He also explores cultural issues and where his Zulu heritage stands in a new society.

The travelling exhibition of his work comes direct from the Standard Bank National Arts Festival to the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg to form part of the main programme of the 1996 Maritzburg Arts Festival.

Trevor Makhoba will run a two-day guest artist project with talented local artists on 14 and 15 August to explore the ways in which an artist arrives at the thematic content of his work and how this is translated into pictorial terms.

The Trevor Makhoba exhibition opens on 7 August and runs until 8 September 1996. Trevor will conduct a public tour on 15 August at 10h30. A sign-interpreted tour for the deaf and hard of hearing will take place on 24 August.
